Delta Air hikes checked baggage fees amid soaring fuel prices

Delta Air Lines said on Tuesday it’s going to increase fees for checked baggage on home and choose short-haul worldwide routes, as airways search to offset soaring jet fuel prices linked to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The enhance marks the first hike in Delta’s home baggage fees in two years and follows comparable strikes by rivals United Airlines and JetBlue Airways.

Airlines worldwide are grappling with sharply increased fuel prices, which have pushed up working prices and squeezed margins, after tensions in the Middle East disrupted the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil delivery hall.

Jet fuel, which had averaged about $85 to $90 a barrel before the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran in February, has surged to round $209 per barrel globally, according to the International Air Transport Association.

Delta said fees for first and second checked baggage on bookings made on or after Wednesday will enhance by $10 each, while the price of a 3rd checked bag will rise by $50.

As a result, the charge for a first checked bag will enhance to $45, the second to $55 and the third to $200.

Delta, in contrast to some of its rivals, has a buffer in the type of a subsidiary-owned refinery in Pennsylvania with a capability of about 190,000 barrels per day that provides practically three-quarters of its fuel wants, though it stays uncovered to spikes in crude oil prices.

Checked baggage advantages tied to Delta’s frequent-flyer applications, premium fares and co-branded bank cards will stay unchanged.

Delta also said there can be no adjustments to baggage fees on long-haul worldwide routes.
