American Cinematheque, Vidiots Offer Free Admission


In the wake of the ICE taking pictures of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis on Jan. 24, non-profit organizations and small companies across the nation are taking part in a nationwide shutdown and basic strike to indicate solidarity with the people of Minnesota and activism against ICE. In Los Angeles, many eating places and outlets are shutting down fully, others are staying open to foster community and continue paying their staff, some while making donations to social justice organizations.

Vidiots in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Eagle Rock announced it might make all screenings freed from cost on Friday. “What’s Love Got to Do With It” and “UHF” are among movies displaying in the night.

The American Cinematheque will supply free admission to “Something Wild” at the Aero in Santa Monica and “Horse Feathers” and “The Killing of a Chinese Bookie” at the Los Feliz 3. Free popcorn and soda will probably be included at the Aero.

Braindead Studios and the Museum of Neon Art are among other cultural shutdowns on Friday.

Among the organizations supporting the effort are IATSE Local 800 (Art Director’s Guild) and the WGA West, which could have a presence at the National Day of Action rally at L.A. City Hall at 1 p.m. Friday.

Restaurants closing down for the day embrace Joan’s on Third, Wilde’s, Bar Siesta, Canyon Coffee, Courage Bagels, Tomat, Bacetti Trattoria and Proof Bakery.
