US insurance giant Aflac says hackers stole personal and health data of 22.6 million people

In June, U.S. insurance giant Aflac disclosed a data breach the place hackers stole clients’ personal data, including Social Security numbers and health data, without saying how many victims had been affected.

On Tuesday, the company confirmed it has begun notifying round 22.65 million people whose data was stolen during the cyberattack.

In a submitting with the Texas legal professional normal, Aflac said that the stolen data contains buyer names, dates of delivery, house addresses, government-issued ID numbers (such as passports and state ID playing cards) and driver’s license numbers, and Social Security numbers, in addition to medical and health insurance data.

And, in a submitting with the Iowa legal professional normal, Aflac said that the cybercriminals accountable for the breach “may be affiliated with a known cyber-criminal organization; federal law enforcement and third-party cybersecurity experts have indicated that this group may have been targeting the insurance industry at large.”

Given that Scattered Spider, an amorphous collective of primarily younger English-speaking hackers, was focusing on the insurance business at the time of the breach, it’s doubtless that this is the group Aflac is referring to.

A spokesperson for Aflac didn’t reply to TechCrunch’s request for remark.

The company says it has round 50 million clients according to its official web site
