Pentagon takes key step toward blacklisting Anthropic

The Pentagon has reportedly requested Boeing and Lockheed Martin to element their reliance on Anthropic’s Claude chatbot ahead of a Friday deadline for the AI agency to both calm down its safeguards or face blacklisting.

The request, first reported by Axios, got here after the Pentagon threatened last week to declare Anthropic a “supply chain risk” – a uncommon rebuke usually reserved for overseas corporations like China’s Huawei. As The Post reported, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned Anthropic boss Dario Amodei at a tense assembly earlier this week that he has until Friday at 5:01 pm ET to take away restrictions on how the US army can use its chatbot.

Hegseth said if that doesn’t occur, the Pentagon might use the Defense Production Act to successfully drive Anthropic to tailor Claude for its use. Some critics have pointed out that the “supply chain risk” designation and a possible use of the DPA may very well be seen as contradictory.

Representatives for the Pentagon and Anthropic didn’t instantly return requests for remark.

Amodei reiterated that Anthropic wouldn’t help the use of its technology to allow mass surveillance of Americans or to energy weapons that can hearth without human oversight. He insisted the company’s purple traces have never impacted a army operation.

The Tuesday assembly between Amodei and Hegseth was described as cordial however tense, with the protection secretary praising Claude’s capabilities even as he delivered the ultimatum.

Claude is the only chatbot at present utilized by the US army in categorised conditions.
