Ozempic, Wegovy users cutting back on grocery spending: study

Americans on weight-loss medication aren’t just trimming their figures — they’re shrinking their grocery payments, too, according to a new study.

Households with members who start taking blockbuster GLP-1 urge for food suppressants such as Ozempic and Wegovy slash meals spending within months, with the steepest pullbacks hitting snacks and other calorie-rich merchandise, Cornell University researchers discovered.

The study, printed last week in the Journal of Marketing Research, confirmed that US households reduce grocery spending by a median of 5.3% within six months of beginning a GLP-1 drug.

Among higher-income households, the drop exceeded 8%.

Spending fell exterior the grocery store, too.

Purchases at fast-food chains, espresso retailers and other limited-service eating places declined by about 8%, the researchers discovered.

The paper linked survey data on GLP-1 use with detailed transaction data from tens of hundreds of households, providing one in all the clearest real-world appears to be like yet at how the medication reshape on a regular basis meals shopping for.

Unlike earlier research that relied on self-reported diets, the researchers analyzed precise purchases collected by Numerator, which tracks grocery and restaurant transactions for a nationally consultant panel of about 150,000 US households.

That data allowed the team to match households before and after medication use — and against related households that never took the medication — isolating adjustments tied to GLP-1 adoption.

Ultra-processed, calorie-dense meals noticed the sharpest declines. Spending on savory snacks dropped about 10%, with equally large decreases in sweets, baked items and cookies.

Even on a regular basis staples took successful. Purchases of bread, meat and eggs declined, exhibiting that the shift in purchasing habits wasn’t restricted to indulgences.

Only a handful of classes moved in the wrong way. Yogurt purchases rose the most, adopted by contemporary fruit, nutrition bars and meat snacks — and those will increase had been modest relative to the general decline.

“The main pattern is a reduction in overall food purchases,” said researcher Sylvia Hristakeva.

“Only a small number of categories show increases, and those increases are modest relative to the overall decline.”

For households that stayed on the medication, the spending cuts endured for not less than a 12 months.

But the adjustments weren’t everlasting for everybody. Roughly one third of users stopped taking the medication during the study interval.

When they did, their meals spending reverted to pre-adoption ranges — and grocery baskets turned barely less healthy than before, pushed partially by elevated spending on sweet and chocolate.

That rebound provides clues about what’s actually driving the shift.

The authors cautioned they’ll’t totally separate the organic effects of GLP-1 medication from other lifestyle adjustments users might make at the same time.

Still, the sharp drop in spending after beginning — and the snap-back after stopping — factors to urge for food suppression as a key mechanism.

Weight loss medication have quickly unfold across the nation.

The share of US households reporting not less than one GLP-1 consumer climbed from about 11% in late 2023 to more than 16% by mid-2024, the Cornell researchers famous.

Weight-loss users skew youthful and wealthier, while people taking the GLP-1 medication for diabetes — their unique supposed use — are typically older and more evenly distributed across earnings teams.
