Nike shares jump 5% after Apple CEO Tim Cook doubles

Apple chief Tim Cook purchased shares value about $3 million in Nike, a transfer that practically doubled his private stake in the sportswear maker and signaled confidence in the turnaround strategy laid out by CEO Elliott Hill.

Shares of the company surged 5% on Wednesday after a regulatory submitting confirmed that Cook, who has been on Nike’s board since 2005, purchased 50,000 shares at $58.97 each.

It was the largest open market inventory buy for a Nike director or govt and probably the largest in more than a decade, said Jonathan Komp, analyst at Baird Equity Research.

“(We see) Cook’s move as a positive signal for the progress under CEO Elliott Hill and Nike’s “Win Now” actions,” Komp said.

The buy comes days after Nike reported weaker quarterly margins and weak sales in China even as CEO Hill tries to revive demand by contemporary advertising plans and innovation centered on working and sports activities, while phasing out lagging lifestyle manufacturers.

He has also tried to fix Nike’s ties with wholesalers such as Dicks Sporting Goods to extend visibility among consumers amid stiff competitors from newer manufacturers.

However, the strategy has strained Nike’s margins, which have been declining for over a yr, while its efforts to win again its premier place in discount-friendly China seems to be faltering.

Nike’s shares have slumped practically 13% since it reported outcomes on Dec. 18 and are on monitor for the fourth straight yr of declines. They have been buying and selling at $60.19 on Wednesday.
