Modern Emo Band Brings Big Energy to Philly

As Millennials hit the age the place traditional rock channels now embody their music, it’s no shock that acts are placing while the nostalgia iron is scorching. And what better approach to recall your youth than via emo music, the style best-equipped for obsessing about love and dying and hope and all of life’s big questions?

2025 has been a big yr for emo milestones — My Chemical Romance headlined a stadium tour! Rilo Kiley reunited! The Academy Is… announced a twentieth anniversary “Almost Here” tour! — however it hasn’t yielded a lot new music from the style’s A-list.

Luckily, there’s a new era of pop punkers who have been closely influenced by the bands of yesteryear, and among the best is Michigan-based Hot Mulligan, whose bold fourth album “The Sound a Body Makes When It’s Still” dropped in August. Filled with tight riffs, sharp songwriting and lead singer Tades Sanville’s distinctive screams, it’s the form of album that may sound more dazzling in a studio in contrast to a live setting. But not like so many of their forebears who deserted chops so as to deal with power, Hot Mulligan amped issues up while sounding nice during their Nov. 8 headlining present at the Fillmore Philadelphia.

The band charged via the first aspect of “Sound a Body Makes” to start the set, with drummer Brandon Blakeley and bassist Jonah Kramer making a twisty, transferring basis to anchor even the quickest pop-punk moments. The interaction of rhythm guitarist Chris Freeman and lead Ryan Malicsi was spectacular, with fast riffing and tapping that evoked midwest emo heroes like American Football. Additionally, Sanville and Freeman’s co-mingling vocals have been, relying on the second, complementary of their concord or shredded of their screaming, without screeching into off-key territory. It’s a powerful feat to see the band’s complicated parts all lock in together, particularly when many style legends have been keen to step apart and let the viewers sing the high notes live.

Despite the band’s deal with craft, they have been also there to have a superb time and cross those vibes onto the viewers. Sanville’s prolonged hair was flying as he stalked the stage, sometimes stopping to scream wildly, his physique contorting as if struck by lightning. New album highlights “And a Big Load,” a breakneck dance get together about the challenges of sobriety, and “Monica Lewinskibidi,” a hooky yet mournful tribute to lacking a sick liked one on tour, have been as sharp and blistering as something in the band’s early work.

Meanwhile, the massively energetic crowd was consistently crowdsurfing and smushing against the entrance rail. Electricity ran via the followers, with circle pits opening during older favorites like “Shhhh! Golf Is On,” “Equip Sunglasses” and “BCKYRD.”

Ultimately, for elder Millennial emo followers whose necks get drained from headbanging and ft get sore after standing (let alone moshing!) for a 90-minute set, it’s heartening to know bands like Hot Mulligan inspire the next era of punks to get sweaty and loopy in the GA part.
