Iranian hackers are targeting American critical infrastructure, US agencies warn

The U.S. authorities is warning that Iran-backed hackers are escalating their ways by targeting American critical infrastructure programs with the intention of inflicting disruption.

In a joint advisory revealed Tuesday, the FBI, the National Security Agency, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the U.S. Department of Energy collectively warned that Iranian authorities hackers have been exploiting internet-facing programs used across a variety of sectors. These embody water and wastewater utilities, in addition to power and local authorities services. The agencies didn’t particularly title any of the targets however said that the hacks had been geared toward inflicting “disruptive effects within the United States” and had already resulted in “operational disruption and financial loss.”

The hackers focused programmable logic controllers and supervisory management and data acquisition (SCADA) merchandise, which are used to manage and handle industrial tools and programs in critical infrastructure operations, the agencies said.
