Guests are complaining about an unknown fee on their restaurant invoice, warning others to remember.

A photograph goes viral of a receipt from the Edgewater Hotel in Seattle, Washington, showcasing an added cost that the diners weren’t anticipating. The Facebook account Elm Streethouse posted the photograph, saying the fee added an additional $15 to their invoice.

This isn’t the only few diners have to fret about. Beginning Jan. 1, eateries and retailers across Washington are imposing elevated prices for the plastic luggage used to move meals residence, urging patrons to convey their personal containers.

But that’s not the fee from the restaurant Six Seven at the Edgewater Hotel. That was a Large Party fee, which is an added 20% to the invoice.

“I went out for drinks and a few small plates, thinking it would be a normal night. Two people, nothing wild,” the consumer posted.

“We ordered a couple of cocktails, sliders, burrata, and called it a day. When the check comes, the total already feels higher than expected, so I actually look at the receipt instead of just tapping my card. That’s when I see a 20% ‘Large Party’ charge added on.”

The consumer said the fee was added despite their get together only consisting of two people. They weren’t given a heads up about the fee from their waiter, however instead it was just quietly added to the whole.

“No heads-up, no sign, no mention from the server. Just quietly baked in like it’s the most normal thing in the world,” they said.

As they continued studying the receipt, they noticed that the further fee wasn’t even for the employees – and it wasn’t for large events. It was added to all receipts for upkeep of the constructing.

What was the hidden receipt fee?

“It’s a ‘pier maintenance fee’ that helps ownership maintain the integrity of the over-the-water facility so I can have a ‘unique experience,’” they wrote.

The restaurant is positioned on a pier at 2411 Alaskan Way, Pier 67. The further fee goes in the direction of repairs on the dock.

The invoice before the added cost was $79.50. With the pier fee and tax, the whole ended up being $105.27.

“So I’m paying an automatic 20% surcharge, not as a tip, but as a cover charge disguised as one… after already paying inflated menu prices… plus tax… plus still being expected to tip on top of that.

“At no point did I ask to personally sponsor the structural integrity of the building. If there’s a pier fee, just put it in the prices or tell me upfront. Don’t slap a fake gratuity on the bill and then clarify in fine print that it doesn’t even go to the people serving me. Nothing like finishing a meal feeling like you accidentally signed up for a micro-subscription to a dock.”

Can I dispute hidden charges on my bank card?

In the comments, people requested if there have been indicators round the constructing explaining the fee. If not, they are able to dispute the cost.

“Is there anything posted on the menu, table, door stating the fee. If not dispute the additional charge on your CC,” one particular person commented.

Another added, “If you used a cr card you might be able to dispute this large party charge . Would have discussed this before paying the bill..unbelievable.”

A 3rd said, “Exactly why I pay cash at every restaurant I go to. I pay for my food/drink, tax, and if service was good, a decent tip. Nothing more.”

“Well, your ‘large’ party was putting more weight on the pier so you’re helping pay for maintenance! All joking aside, that is shady as heck,” a commenter joked.
