CBS Evening News Says ‘We Love America’ Is One of Guiding Principles

Under the oversight of Bari Weiss, CBS’s newly revamped weeknight news program is waving the American flag — and it’s not apologizing for its pro-U.S. editorial stance.

On Friday, the program launched a press release outlining “five simple principles” that will inform the present’s presentation of the news under anchor Tony Dokoupil, who was beforehand a morning news anchor on CBS. According to CBS News, what had previously been a “38-page handbook” is now “5 simple values.”

Dokoupil was appointed to the anchor chair of “CBS Evening News” last month by Weiss, the editor in chief of CBS News and founder of The Free Press, which describes itself as “a new media company built on the ideals that were once the bedrock of American journalism.” Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison acquired The Free Press in a reported $150 million deal and put in Weiss to supervise CBS News’ editorial operations in what he said was an effort to revive viewers’ belief in the outlet.

“When the new ‘CBS Evening News’ kicks off on Monday, we promise to live by these five simple principles – from our very first show on the road, to our first broadcast on the new set in New York, and every one after that,” the present said in a collection of posts on social media.

One of the rules outlined by “CBS Evening News” was this: “We love America. And we make no apologies for saying so. Our foundational values of liberty, equality and the rule of law make us the last best hope on Earth.” The news present said that “We aim to do our part every night: One way to think about our show is as a daily conversation about exactly where we are as a country and where we are going.”

The uncommon pro-American pledge by the broadcast journalism outlet will reinforce hypothesis that Ellison put Weiss in cost of CBS News in an effort to spice up its attraction among MAGA supporters.

On Thursday, Jan. 1, Dokoupil shared his ideas on the state of journalism in the U.S. ahead of his taking over as “CBS Evening News” anchor.

“People do not trust us like they used to,” Dokoupil said in a video shared on CBSNews.com. He continued: “On too many stories, the press has missed the story. And it’s not just us. It’s all of legacy media. Because we’ve taken into account the perspective of advocates, and not the average American. Or, we put too much weight in the analysis of academics, or elites, and not enough on you.”

Here are the “five simple principles” that “CBS Evening News” says will probably be guided by with Dokoupil as the anchor:

  1. We give you the results you want. That means you come first. Not our advertisers. Not politicians. Not company pursuits, including the company homeowners of CBS News.
  2. We report on the world as it’s. We’ll be trustworthy and direct with you. That means no weasel phrases or padded landings. We’ll let you know what we all know, after we realize it. Well update our reporting after we uncover new information. And we’ll admit after we get it incorrect.
  3. We respect you. We consider that our fellow Americans are good and discerning. It’s our job to current you with the fullest image — and the strongest voices on all sides of an issue. We belief you to make up your individual minds, and to make the choices that are best for you, your households and your communities.
  4. We love America. And we make no apologies for saying so. Our foundational values of liberty, equality and the rule of regulation make us the last best hope on Earth. We also consider in Franklin’s well-known line about America as a republic — if we will preserve it. We intention to do our half every evening: One solution to assume about our present is as a daily dialog about precisely the place we’re as a rustic and the place we’re going.
  5. We respect custom, however we also consider in the future. We embrace the instruments that permit us to succeed in you the place you might be. Some of you’ll watch this present on linear tv. Others will more and more watch it on social media. What we will assure is that the instruments will continue to vary — however some issues never will. One of those issues is trustworthy journalism.

“CBS Evening News” with Tony Dokoupil premieres Monday, Jan. 5, at 6:30 p.m. ET.
