Buzzy, NYC-based Food52 goes belly up, rival makes bid to buy it

Food52 Inc., the buzzy cooking and home-decor company based in Brooklyn, filed for chapter safety this week after an enormous round of layoffs earlier this month. 

The 16-year-old company’s lender yanked its funding on Dec. 15, leaving Food52 – which also owns the tableware model Dansk and home-decor model Schoolhouse – with no cash in the financial institution.

“Overnight, the company found itself scrambling for survival,” according to the submitting in Delaware chapter court docket.

Food52, which presents recipes, dwelling enchancment suggestions and sells upscale dwelling items on-line, declined to remark.

Food52 bumped into hassle after it acquired Dansk and Portland, Ore-based Schoolhouse and “found itself managing three distinct brands with few synergies,” according to the submitting. And it “faced ongoing executive changes, strategy changes and staff turnover,” the submitting said.

Based in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the place it has occupied the whole thirteenth ground and ran check kitchens and studios, Food52 is led by Erika Badan, the former Barstools Sports CEO.

Badan has been at the helm almost two years and she or he submitted the chapter submitting.

“Being blunt,” she writes in the submitting, “this chapter 11 case is far from perfect but is the only path forward that maximizes value … and preserves [Food52’s] business as a going concern given the situation Avid has put the debtor in.”

The stalking-horse bid is topic to better presents. An public sale for the company’s property will probably be held in February, according to the submitting.

America’s Test Kitchen’s provide supplies Food52 with instant entry to money to hold the enterprise afloat during the sales course of.
