Artist Goes From Stripping to Battling Demons in Maximilien Dejoie Pic

Documentarian Maximilien Dejoie confesses he was feeling the stress while following his topic for Ji.hlava doc fest main competitors title “Everything Works Out (in the End).”

His highway film account of an American artist who strikes shortly from a profession as a stripper to would-be boxer to author/musician while actually (in her view) combating off demons, was difficult to seize, particularly working solo with a handheld digital camera.

“It’s kind of liberating,” Dejoie says of creating the doc this method, permitting him to comply with Katelyn Louise Doty – or just Kate more often – wherever she goes…even when she reverses course on a life path, sending the movie plot into query.

As audiences realized following Dejoie’s screening at the Czech Republic’s top doc event, he adopted Doty from Chicago across the northeastern U.S. for months and was hardly ever given a second likelihood if he missed one thing.

“I had to compose my camera and my microphones in a way that I could handle it at any time,” he says. “You have to think about composition and focus and this and that all the time…I think the most challenging thing at that time was to capture the moment – because Kate did not wait for me.”

Invariably Doty would say compelling issues when not on digital camera and if Dejoie ever requested her to revisit that while he was rolling, the reply could be pitiless.

“She would say, ‘No, I said it. The moment is gone.’”

Dejoie acknowledges the shoot was also powerful on Doty, who hosted him in her dwelling house and basically lived on digital camera during the shoot while going via titanic private adjustments.

“I was very interested in how she was describing the strip club life,” the director says, “in a very non-victimizing way.” If something, Doty appeared empowered by her work in a rowdy rock club, married to musician Chip Z’Nuff.

Raised in a standard Catholic house, Doty, out of financial necessity, had determined to repay her money owed by working in the grownup leisure business, hoping the job would just be a short lived resolution. But years later, when she felt the work had develop into a defining chapter in her life, she determined to change issues up and reconnect along with her religion.

She started working in a retirement house for getting old Catholic clergymen and devoted herself to artistic pursuits: recording her first album, writing a guide, and, by some means characteristically, then deciding to take up boxing.

“I shot a lot of material I didn’t end up using,” says Dejoie, who thought as soon as Doty stepped into the ring he would have a compelling plotline for his movie. But the part handed and turned out not to be the reply she was searching for in life.

It wasn’t the first curveball he was thrown while capturing. Shortly after he arrived in the Chicago space to start the project, Doty informed him, as he places it, “that she was possessed by a demon” and would wish an exorcism.

As for his personal ideas on the query of demons and exorcism, Italian-born Dejoie says he personally has bother believing such issues are real – however admits that sometimes when round Doty, that place might be difficult to keep.

At one point, he says, Doty lastly allowed him to movie her praying – one thing she had refused to agree to up to then.

Afterward, Doty said to him, “If you have questions, you can ask them now. Because I’m not going to allow you to shoot this again.”

When Dejoie wanted a recent data card for the digital camera, he started rolling again — and located himself by accident recording over the praying photographs. It was one thing he’d never performed before as a veteran digital camera operator and director.

She tells me, “Well, there you go. The demons don’t like you photographing this.”

“Even though I’m not a believer, in that moment, that circumstance, for a moment I thought…uhhh.”

The exorcism experience led Doty to what he calls “a meditation on faith and redemption.”

Feeling the want to reconnect along with her roots, she left Chicago and hit the highway, crossing the United States in direction of her hometown in Massachusetts, during the last days before the 2024 presidential election.

It was during this more contemplative part of Doty’s life, which the director filmed with a slower tempo, leaving each the viewers and his topic with house to breathe, that Dejoie realized he had his story.

He knew the movie would shut on this return to a quieter life, in which Doty says what she desires most after all the things is the likelihood “to be nobody.”

Dejoie says he knew he might lastly put the digital camera down and the movie would come up from no matter it was the two had just recorded together over a lot house and time.

He told himself: “It’s going to just see her going back home and I’m going to build it from what I have.”
