Amazon’s latest round of sweeping layoffs hit hundreds in New York

Amazon’s latest round of brutal layoffs included a number of hundred workers in New York, The Post has discovered.

Some 135 company Amazon workers who labored at 1140 Broadway obtained pink slips in January, according to a state Department of Labor submitting this week. 

Another 165 Amazon employees in New York have been axed, with the authorities data anticipated to hit the system within the coming weeks, a source conversant in the filings told The Post.

They’re all half of 16,000 layoffs announced last month. In October, the e-commerce large slashed another 14,000 company jobs — half of a restructuring plan stemming from investments in artificial intelligence and what consultants described as over-hiring during the COVID pandemic.

The company’s CEO Andy Jassy has slashed practically 10% of Amazon’s workforce in a three-month span.

Last 12 months, he said new tech may create new job alternatives – though he also admitted it may carry “efficiency gains” by serving to to scale back the general workforce.

“We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today,” Jassy wrote in a memo in June.

“In the next few years, we expect that [AI] will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company,” he added.

Amazon didn’t announce the places it focused for layoffs, so the authorities filings are the only indication of the place the losses came about.

The company declined to touch upon the Department of Labor filings.

“We’ve been working to strengthen our organization by reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy,” senior vp of people Beth Galetti wrote in a January weblog submit.

New York took a big hit last 12 months with practically 1,000 job losses at 9 Amazon places in the metropolis.

The latest cuts are smaller and certain targeted on tech roles, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives told The Post.

“Amazon has tried to establish a strong presence as part of the New York tech community and this layoff is a dent in those plans,” he said, including that “many other NYC tech players will likely aggressively focus on this opportunity to add great tech talent.”
